The Power of Shared Struggle
Finding Friendship in the Wilderness
It was the summer before college when I signed up for an outward bounds class that started two weeks before the rest of the freshmen arrived on campus. “How hard could this class be?” I thought! In my mind, High Roads was going to be a glorified summer camp with some extra reading and hiking.
After a four-hour bus ride deep into the wilderness, we were split into groups of 10, handed oversized backpacks, and given a crash course in survival. Two sets of clothes, a few personal items, and shared essential gear were all we were allowed to carry. My overstuffed bags and my beloved snacks were left behind at basecamp.
What followed were two weeks of grueling, unmarked wilderness hiking, 12-hour bushwhacking days, filtering water through headscarves, bear encounters during night watches, and finally a 10k run to the finish. Along the way, we camped in relentless rain, swam in frigid waters, and learned to endure each other's raw, unfiltered selves; no makeup, no distractions, and no escape from vulnerability.
By the end, we emerged with muddy clothes, scrapes, and two weeks’ worth of untamed hair, but also with a bond that rivaled any friendship I had ever known. Through the discomfort, physical challenges, and emotional breakthroughs, these women became my people.
The Power of Shared Struggle
That experience taught me something foundational: pushing past limits in a community creates unshakable bonds. Whether it’s setting up camp in the mud, running a race, or facing exhaustion together, collaborative effort builds trust, empathy, and resilience.
